Greater Phoenix Connective Selected as the First U.S. 'Intelligent Cities' Mentor to E.U. Cities

The Connective joins 5 other non-European Union cities in the Intelligent Cities Challenge to help develop world-class smart cities innovation programs around the Globe.

October 5th, 2020, Phoenix, Arizona: The European Commission has selected the Greater Phoenix Connective to become a mentor to European cities in the Intelligent Cities Challenge (ICC), making Greater Phoenix the first mentor Region from the United States chosen to work with over 100 EU cities. Each mentor organization will be paired with communities facing similar challenges to collaboratively work together to find sustainable solutions through the use of innovative smart city technology. This world-wide initiative kicks off immediately and includes participation over the next 30 months.

“We are exceptionally honored to have been selected to participate in this distinguished initiative that will improve our quality of life and potentially the lives of people from around the globe,” said Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates. “This truly highlights the work we have done as a Region from the moment we embarked on the journey to make Maricopa County one of the world’s first Smart Regions and proves that collaboration between communities locally and around the globe is key to finding solutions to the technology challenges we are facing today.”

The Connective was selected to join the ranks of Barcelona, Singapore and other top tier global smart cities for its successful Regional ecosystem approach bringing together 23 jurisdictions, as well as university and industry partners. The ICC has slated 6-7 mentee cities for the Connective to work with on topics including:

  1. Green Economy and Environment

  2. Mobility and Urban Infrastructure

  3. Government Services and Social Connectedness

  4. Economic Growth and Skilling

  5. Health and Safety

“The Connective is based on the idea that by working together as one cohesive Smart Region, the Greater Phoenix communities and partners can become global leaders,” said City of Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “We are honored to be recognized by the European Union as an international best practice in smart cities. Phoenix has the right mix to become a world-renowned location for technology, innovation, and collaboration,” concluded Mayor Gallego.

“Participation as a Mentor City in this program will provide an amazing platform to bring global notoriety to the innovation in the Greater Phoenix area, and we at the Connective are proud to be that groundbreaking catalyst to be able to highlight and further establish all of the incredible work that is being done by partners all across our Region,” said Brian Dean, Program Manager for the Connective. “The collaboration that will come from this event is invaluable and has potential to positively impact not only our collective region, but cities across the world, for generations to come.”
